Banks in several states are closed today, September 5, on account of Id-E-Milad and Thiruvonam, according to the
Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar for the month.
Customers have been advised to check with their respective branches before visiting, reported ET.
As per the RBI notification, banks will not be operational today in Gujarat, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana (Hyderabad), Andhra Pradesh (Vijayawada), Manipur, Jammu & Kashmir (Jammu and Srinagar), Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, New Delhi, and Jharkhand, among other states.
However, the Maharashtra government has shifted the public holiday for Eid-e-Milad in Mumbai city and its suburban districts to September 8, 2025, instead of today.
“The Government of Maharashtra has declared September 08, 2025, as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The public holiday on September 05, 2025, declared earlier has been cancelled,” the RBI said in a circular dated September 4, cited by ET.
Accordingly, markets for government securities, foreign exchange, money markets, and rupee interest rate derivatives will remain open today, while transactions scheduled for September 8 will be settled on September 9.
Meanwhile, digital banking services such as UPI, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and online transactions remain unaffected.
But certain services, including cash deposits or withdrawals above limits, demand drafts, locker access, and KYC updates, still require a physical branch visit.
