Reliance acquires more than 70% stake in Udhaiyam Agro Foods
CHENNAI: Reliance has acquired a majority stake in Tamil Nadu’s heritage agro foods brand Udhaiyam, which has an annual revenue of more than Rs 600 crore, for an undisclosed sum. Sources indicate that Reliance has bought over 70% in the company.
The deal announced on Thursday was between Consumer Products Ltd (RCPL), the FMCG arm of Reliance Industries Ltd, and Udhaiyam Agro Foods Private Ltd.
The more than three-decade-old Udhaiyam brand has built a strong presence across key staple categories such as pulses, rice, spices, snacks and idli batter, with an extensive distribution network across Tamil Nadu.
RCPL will hold a majority stake in the company, while the erstwhile promoters, S Sudhakar and S Dinakar, will retain a minority stake and continue to be closely involved in operations as the brand looks to scale up its national footprint.
“Udhaiyam is a well-established brand with decades of consumer trust in Tamil Nadu,” said T Krishnakumar, director at RCPL. The acquisition would help accelerate the brand’s expansion beyond its home market, leveraging RCPL’s reach and capabilities, he added. S Sudhakar, managing director of Udhaiyams Agro Foods, said the partnership opens up fresh growth opportunities for the brand.
