Power sector has investment potential of over Rs 40 lakh crore: Khattar
NEW DELHI: India has an investment potential of over ₹40 lakh crore in the power sector, Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Thursday at a curtain-raiser for a global conference on the power sector.
“We estimate an investment potential of over $345.97 billion in electricity generation and $68.22 billion in transmission and distribution. The energy storage sector alone offers an opportunity of $35.21 billion,” the power minister said while formally announcing the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026.
Union power secretary Pankaj Agarwal said the country’s power transmission network will soon cross the 5 lakh circuit kilometre (ckm) mark, having already reached 4.97 lakh ckm. He added that India is a high-growth market with an investment potential of about half a trillion dollars over the next seven years.
The summit will be held from Mar 19 to 22 at Yashobhoomi in Dwarka. Khattar said the global conference will highlight India’s role in energy transition and discuss challenges and opportunities in the power sector. It is expected to bring together domestic and international stakeholders from govt, industry, academia and civil society to deliberate on the future of electricity and sustainable energy systems, and explore avenues for cooperation.
The minister also unveiled the summit brochure and a teaser film, saying the event reflected India’s resolve to shape the future of electricity systems. More than 500 exhibitors, over 1,000 delegates and around 300 speakers from India and abroad are expected to participate in the event. The summit will feature more than 50 conference sessions, expert-led panel discussions, thematic pavilions and technology showcases spanning the electricity and clean energy value chain.
The programme will also include a buyer-seller meet aimed at facilitating partnerships.
