BENGALURU: A day after
Uber was denied a new licence to operate in London, homegrown cab-hailing company
Ola said it has begun registering licensed drivers in
London
to start operations. Ola had said in July it had got a licence to operate in London and that it was planning to start operations in September.
Ola said over “50,000 licensed drivers will now be assured that they can continue to provide mobility services in London”, one of the largest markets globally.
According to reports, Transport for London (TfL) has decided to not grant a new licence to Uber as it posed safety risks to passengers. Uber can make an appeal to TfL and can continue to operate during the process.
“We have had constructive conversations with the authorities, drivers, and local communities in London over the past months, and look forward to contributing towards solving mobility issues in innovative and meaningful ways,” said Simon Smith, head (international), Ola. Other cab-hailing players like Bolt, Gett and Kapten — which are backed by BMW and Daimler — are already present in London.
The Bengaluru-based company, which entered the
UK
last year, is present in
Birmingham
, Liverpool, Bristol, Coventry and Warwick, among others. Ola continues to fight the market share battle with arch-rival Uber in India, but over the last few years it has also expanded to markets like Australia and New Zealand.
