Now gift your loved one a 3D printed voice or fingerprint
Chennai: When Anisha Vignesh was on the lookout to gift something special to her husband on their first wedding anniversary, she found limited options.
“Engraved show pieces, mugs are boring and almost childish. I wanted to give him something unique,” she said.
Vignesh went on to gift her husband a 3D printed figurine of her husband and their pet. From a simple personalised mobile phone case to a 3D printed pendant with your fingerprint or a figurine or bust, players like ‘Augrav’,
Customised gifting platform icustommadeit sees orders for 3D figurines and photographs. “Some of our customers ask for 3D models of themselves. We either have photographs taken from multiple angles as inputs or we scan the models. The 3D printed models become ready in three weeks, “said Raj Iyer, founder, icustommadeit. The startup guarantees 80%-85% accuracy. The price for 3D printed gifts ranges from Rs 5,000 to Rs 40,000 and number of orders range between 25 and 30 every month.
Occasions such as weddings and graduation ceremonies drive the gifting scene for 3D printed-items. Global 3D, which initially used to sell 3D printers to gifting platforms among other sectors employing 3D printers, is now into creating gifts. Besides figurines, phone cases and personalised keychains are in demand.
“While gifting forms less than 5% of the total 3D printing assignments, the segment is growing as the options are personalised. The segment is growing at 20% CAGR every year. We are employing 3D artists to design and develop the models,” said Gopal Krishna, founder, Global 3D.
Coimbatore-based Augrav offers personalised jewellery. From 3D printed faces on pendants to fingerprints and even voice waves, consumers have varied requests when they seek to personalise their gifts, says Vivek Krishna, founder, Augrav.
For instance, with voice waves, Krishna asks clients to send a recording of their choice which he then converts to sound waves. These are 3D modelled and then printed using a 3D printer. “Voices, like fingerprints are unique to each person. So we have couples who record ‘I love you’ and have it 3D printed for their wedding rings,” Krishna says. With fingerprints, customers send a photo of their fingerprint taken using a stamp pad and Augrav 3D prints this in the jewellery of their choice.
