Noida International Airport inauguration: Delhi-NCR gets new airport - all you need to know
Israel Iran War
Developed at an investment of around Rs 11,200 crore under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model, the project is expected to enhance both regional and international connectivity for the National Capital Region (NCR).
The airport is being positioned as a key addition to India’s aviation network, aimed at easing pressure on existing infrastructure while supporting the country’s ambition of becoming a global aviation hub.
Second international gateway for Delhi NCR
With rising passenger demand and capacity constraints at IGI Airport, the new facility is expected to play a crucial role in distributing traffic more efficiently.
Together, the two airports will function as an integrated aviation system, helping reduce congestion, improve connectivity, and enhance the region’s standing among leading global aviation hubs.
Phase I capacity and future expansion plans
Phase I of the airport is designed to handle 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA), providing immediate relief to the region’s growing air travel demand.
The project has been planned with scalability in mind, with provisions to expand capacity to 70 million passengers annually in subsequent phases.
This long-term vision reflects the government’s strategy to future-proof infrastructure and accommodate sustained growth in air travel.
Modern infrastructure and all-weather operations
The airport features a 3,900-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, making it suitable for both domestic and international long-haul operations.
Equipped with advanced navigation systems such as the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and modern airfield lighting, the facility is designed to support efficient, all-weather, round-the-clock operations. These features ensure operational reliability even under challenging weather conditions.
Cargo hub and logistics ecosystem
In addition to passenger services, the airport includes a comprehensive cargo ecosystem aimed at strengthening logistics and trade.
The Multi-Modal Cargo Hub comprises an Integrated Cargo Terminal and dedicated logistics zones, with an initial handling capacity of over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually.
This capacity is expected to expand significantly to around 18 lakh metric tonnes in the future, positioning the airport as a major cargo and logistics centre in North India.
Dedicated MRO facility to enhance efficiency
A key component of the airport’s infrastructure is a 40-acre Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility.
This dedicated facility is expected to improve operational efficiency by enabling airlines to service and maintain aircraft locally, reducing turnaround times and operational costs. It also strengthens India’s capabilities in aviation maintenance services.
Sustainability and future-ready design
Noida International Airport has been designed as a sustainable and future-ready infrastructure project, with a focus on achieving net-zero emissions.
The project incorporates energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible practices, aligning with India’s broader climate goals. The airport’s development reflects a growing emphasis on green infrastructure in large-scale projects.
Architecture inspired by Indian heritage
Blending modern infrastructure with cultural aesthetics, the airport’s architectural design draws inspiration from traditional Indian elements such as ghats and havelis.
This approach aims to create a distinctive identity for the airport while offering passengers a sense of place rooted in Indian heritage.
Strategic location and multi-modal connectivity
Strategically located along the Yamuna Expressway in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, the airport is planned as a multi-modal transport hub.
It will feature seamless integration with road, rail, metro and regional transit systems, ensuring smooth connectivity for passengers and cargo.
PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Noida International Airport at Jewar, also sometimes called the Jewar airport. The Noida International Airport is the second international airport in Delhi-NCR region and will help ease congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The swanky new airport has been built with ‘world-class’ infrastructure standards in mind and offers several passenger-friendly amenities. What’s special about the Noida International Airport at Jewar? We take a look at the top 10 facts and stunning photos of the new airport:
The phase 1 of Noida International Airport at Jewar has been built at a cost of Rs 11,282 crore. The broader plan is to make Jewar a key aviation hub in northern India, easing the burden from the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The total estimated cost of the project which will be ready in subsequent phases is Rs 29,560 crore.
According to official details, the concessionaire has invested Rs 6,876 crore in the first phase, while the state government has spent Rs 4,406 crore on land acquisition.
Considered one of India’s largest greenfield airport developments, in its initial stage, the airport is designed to handle 12 million passengers annually, with the potential to expand capacity to 70 million passengers per year in the future.
The airport spans 1,334 hectares in Phase 1 and features two entry gates, 48 check-in counters including 20 for self-baggage drop, and 10 boarding gates connected through aerobridges.
It also has separate immigration counters for arrivals and departures, one domestic and one international lounge each, and baggage handling infrastructure with two domestic and one international carousel. (Image by Yogesh Kumar)
Designed to serve as a key international gateway for the National Capital Region, the project is expected to significantly boost aviation infrastructure while improving both domestic and international connectivity.

To begin with, the Noida International Airport at Jewar will have one runway and a single passenger terminal which will have the capacity to handle around 1.2 crore passengers annually.
The runway is designed to handle 30 flights per hour, while aircraft stands can accommodate 10 aerobridge-connected planes and 15 via buses.
The infrastructure includes a 3,900-metre runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, along with modern navigation facilities such as an Instrument Landing System and advanced airfield lighting, enabling seamless, all-weather, round-the-clock operations.
Planned as a forward-looking and environmentally conscious project, Noida International Airport is intended to function as a net-zero emissions facility, incorporating energy-efficient technologies and sustainable operational practices.
The design of the airport reflects Indian architectural influences, drawing inspiration from traditional ghats and havelis, thereby combining cultural elements with modern infrastructure.
Commercial flight operations are expected to commence only from May at the earliest, according to a TOI report. Certain mandatory regulatory clearances are still needed to be completed before airlines can begin ticket sales and start services.
At present, IndiGo, Akasa Air and Air India Express have confirmed plans to operate domestic services from the airport. The initial flight network is likely to connect Noida with key cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow and Dehradun, although the final routes will be announced only after the required security approvals are in place. Situated along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport is being developed as an integrated multi-modal transport hub. It is designed to offer seamless connectivity through road, rail, metro and regional transit networks, ensuring smooth movement for both passengers and cargo. However, as of now there are no public transport options available.
To improve last-mile connectivity, the airport has also entered into partnerships with UP Roadways, Mahindra Mobility, Uber and Rapido. (Image by Yogesh Kumar)
The airport is planned to expand in multiple phases as passenger traffic rises. Phase 2, expected by 2030, will increase capacity to 3 crore passengers annually, adding infrastructure such as a second runway and MRO facilities.
Phase 3, targeted for 2034, aims to take capacity to 5 crore passengers, along with a second terminal building. By Phase 4 in 2036, the airport is projected to handle 7 crore passengers annually, supported by cargo hub expansion and aerospace manufacturing hubs.
This connectivity is expected to significantly improve accessibility for travellers across Delhi NCR and neighbouring regions.
Boost to India’s aviation ambitions
The inauguration of Phase I of Noida International Airport is being seen as a major step in strengthening India’s aviation ecosystem.
By expanding capacity, improving connectivity, and integrating modern infrastructure with sustainability, the project is expected to play a key role in positioning Delhi NCR as a major global aviation hub while supporting economic growth and regional development
