MUMBAI: There is some good news for about 25,000 residents of 66 residential colonies constructed under the Prime Minister’s Grant Programme (PMGP) at Umarkhadi, Dharavi, Kamathipura and other areas.
The Maharashtra Buildings Repair and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB) has submitted a proposal to the state government seeking a nod to redevelop nine dilapidated buildings at Umarkhadi PMGP colony.
About 1,000 tenants reside in this colony, According to Prasad Lad, Chairman of MBRRB, the surplus tenements so available, after rehabilitating the existing tenants using a Floor Space Index of 3, will be used to rehab those residing in transit camps.
"Umarkhadi project is a pilot scheme which will then be replicated in other PMGP colonies. These buildings are in an extremely dilapidated condition. We saw no point in repairing these buildings and so, now are planning to redevelop all these PMGP buildings," said Lad.
PMGP colonies were constructed some thirty years ago using the Rs 100 crore given by the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
MBRRB is also going to redevelop transit camps and rehab 2,200 tenants to new homes.
