NEW DELHI: India's largest automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki, has introduced two CNG variants for its recently launched WagonR in India. The CNG alternatives, available only in the base LXI and LXI (O) variants are priced at Rs 4.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi/Rs 5.51 lakh on-road, Delhi) and Rs 5.56 lakh (on-road, Delhi) respectively.

The third-generation WagonR was launched in India on January 23, 2019, with two petrol engine options: A 68PS, 1.0-litre petrol engine and a 83PS, 1.2-litre petrol engine borrowed from the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Baleno and Ignis. A five-speed manual and a five-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) is offered with both engines.

However, the CNG variants are offered only with the smaller 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine that produces 68PS of power and 90Nm of peak torque when running on fuel and 59PS of power and 78Nm of torque when running on CNG. It is coupled with a 5-speed manual gearbox only. Maruti Suzuki claims a fuel efficiency of 33.54km/kg on this trim.

In terms of safety and features, the base

WagonR CNG

LXI gets a driver airbag, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), a speed alert system (beeps at a speed of 80kmph), rear parking sensors and a seat-belt reminder. It also gets front power windows, manual air-conditioning, 13-inch steel wheels, central locking, and a 12V socket. The LXI (O) variant gets all the equipment of the LXI plus an additional passenger airbag.

In Delhi, the CNG variants are priced Rs 66,000 more than its petrol siblings as the petrol LXI trim has a starting price of Rs 4.85 lakh (on-road, Delhi) offered with the same set of features.

The WagonR CNG competes with the likes of the new Hyundai Santro CNG and the Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG in this segment.
