India upped the ante against WTO members like the US and the EU which are not providing adequate number of visas to Indian professionals.
NEW DELHI: India on Monday upped the ante against WTO members like the US and the European Union which are not providing adequate number of visas to Indian professionals and had also put qualification tests for issuing entry documents. Addressing a seminar organised by Icrier, commerce secretary SN Menon said that India would be forced to go back on its offers to liberalise its services sector - which were essentially aimed at allowing greater foreign investment - if other WTO members did not reciprocate with simpler visa rules under the Doha Round of trade liberalisation talks.
Menon said India's ability to respond positively on opening up sectors like telecom, financial services, energy and retail was linked to the ability of developed countries to liberalise services trade through electronic means (like BPOs) and movement of Indian professionals. "We hope that the next round of revised offers will correct this imbalance, failing which it will be difficult for India to justify the host of new sectors,"he added.
