NEW DELHI: In a significant step towards normalisation of their trade ties, India and Pakistan on Tuesday decided to enter into fresh agreements for improved air and sea links even as the move to make the recently-opened trucking route via Wagah border "permanent" did not make headway.
There were also official words of encouragement for Bharti and Reliance Infocomm for partnering Pakistan telecom to lay a fibre optic network from Lahore to the Wagah border.

As part of their ongoing "composite dialogue", the two South Asian neighbours discussed economic and commercial cooperation at the commerce secretaries level. It was decided that technical groups from both sides will meet next month to work on fresh civil aviation and shipping agreements.
Pakistan Telecom is the only operator in that country and is keen to set up a link with India to bring down Internet and data leased line costs.
Outlining the areas of cooperation at the talks, commerce secretary SN Menon said "telecom networking between us would help close interaction between the citizens of the two nations.
With a view to increasing cooperation in various financial sector and capital markets, both sides agreed for a memorandum of understanding between Indian regulator SEBI and the Pakistan stock market watchdog.
The Pakistan side at the talks led by acting commerce secretary Syed Asif Shah agreed with the Indian side on the need to increase cooperation in banking and to provide insurance support for exporters on both sides.
