In fast lane: Carmakers see strong sales growth in January
NEW DELHI: Passenger vehicle makers began 2026 on a strong note, with Jan sales data pointing to a broad-based momentum across the industry, aided by steady demand in smaller towns and cities, and sustained consumer sentiment after GST cuts.
Market leader Maruti Suzuki posted passenger vehicle sales of 2.2 lakh units in Jan 2026, up from 2 lakh units a year ago, including exports that hit an all-time monthly high of around 51 thousand units.
Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer at Maruti Suzuki, said recent Q3 results show a clear revival in the small-car segment after the GST cut. “I think the Q3 results, which we announced last week, show very good growth in the overall numbers…Of the incremental numbers of 98,000 in Q3, 72,000 units were in the 18% GST segment, and 26,000 units were in the 40% GST segment. Clearly, the 18% GST segment is seeing better growth as compared to the 40% segment.”
Hyundai Motor India reported its highest-ever sales, including exports, at 73,137 units in Jan, clocking 11.5% growth. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles recorded total sales of about 71,066 units in Jan, including international shipments, compared to 48,316 units during same month last year.
M&M sold 67,087 passenger vehicles in Jan, up 24% from a year ago period.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported Jan sales of 33,880 units, up 15%, while Kia India sold about 27,603 units in Jan with a year-on-year growth of 10.3%.
