IMF economist Shekhar Aiyar has been appointed as the new Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), the think tank announced on Wednesday.
He is set to take charge in November, news agency PTI reported.
Aiyar currently serves as Assistant Director in the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), overseeing the organisation’s work programme on trade and industrial policy. Previously, he was the IMF’s mission chief for Germany and headed the Eurozone Division.
He has also held academic and advisory roles, including as a visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), a visiting professor at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), and as an advisor to the Bank of England, the statement added.
Aiyar holds a BA in Economics from Delhi University, an MA in Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University, and a PhD in Economics from Brown University.
