How top Indian firms are driving the eco transition
From legacy conglomerates to tech-driven innovators, companies across the spectrum are integrating sustainability into their core operations. Their efforts span renewable energy, sustainable packaging, recycling, green mobility, and precision agriculture — collectively shaping the contours of a greener future.
Among the key players is Adani Green Energy, which has emerged as one of the largest developers and operators of utility-scale solar, wind, hybrid, and hydro-pumped storage projects. The company has scaled its clean energy footprint, supporting India's renewable targets through large-scale installations.
Tata Power, another major player, has evolved into one of country's largest integrated solar company. Beyond generating solar power, it manufactures cells and modules, rooftop solar systems, and solar water pumps catering to both industrial and residential users. This integrated approach helps strengthen the country’s solar ecosystem from the ground up.
Homegrown wind energy giant Suzlon Energy maintains a global presence across 17 countries. With a focus on wind turbine manufacturing and wind farm development, Suzlon has played a key role in early adoption of wind energy.
JSW Energy, traditionally known for its thermal power capacity, is actively transitioning its energy mix. Nearly half of its generation capacity now comes from renewable sources such as hydro, solar, and wind.
Mahindra & Mahindra is attempting to reshape the future of mobility through electrification and alternate fuels.
Sustainability is also being addressed through innovations in product packaging. In a low-key but impactful move, Catch Salt & Spices — a DS Group brand — has changed the bin colors on its product packaging. The tweak is designed to simplify waste segregation at the consumer level, a small but meaningful intervention in the complex problem of solid waste management.
At the other end of the spectrum, food delivery giant Zomato is exploring ways to reduce the environmental cost of convenience. Through its Packathon initiative, the company is helping partner restaurants transition to plastic-free, sustainable packaging. The idea is not just to reduce single-use plastic, but to embed eco-consciousness across the food delivery chain.
Meanwhile, Pashupati Group is addressing the challenge of post-consumer plastic waste. By converting discarded plastic into high-quality raw materials used in multiple industries, the company is contributing to a circular economy model — one where waste becomes a resource.
In the agricultural sector, Jain Hi-Tech Plant Factory, part of the Bhavarlal Jain group, made strides in precision farming through tissue culture. With one of the world’s largest labs for banana, pomegranate, and strawberry tissue culture, the facility offers virus-free, high-yield planting material. The lab holds multiple ISO certifications and is approved by India’s Department of Biotechnology, underscoring its scientific rigor and scale.
Karnataka-based Emmvee, founded by Dr. D.V. Manjunatha, has built a stronghold in solar water heating and photovoltaic module manufacturing.
Similarly, PuREPower, conceptualised by Dr. Nishanth Dongari under PURE, is working on scalable energy storage solutions. These systems, tailored for homes, businesses, and the grid, seek to enhance reliability while reducing dependence on fossil-fuel-powered electricity.
