CHENNAI: Sridhar Vembu has stepped down as CEO of Zoho Corp after 25 years to focus on AI initiatives . He will take up a new role as chief scientist in the company, Zoho co-founder Shailesh Kumar Davey has been elevated as group CEO. Tony Thomas will lead Zoho US and Rajesh Ganesan will lead Manage- Engine division.

Calling recent major developments in AI both as challenges and opportunities, Vembu said the decision has been made to focus full time on R&D initiatives. “The future of our company entirely depends on how well we navigate the R&D challenge and I am looking forward to my new assignment with energy and vigour. I am also very happy to get back to hands-on technical work,” he said in a post on X. Vembu has been talking about the potential economic disruption of AI for a while, more specifically its impact on the software services industry, adding that Zoho needs to reinvent itself to sustain longer. He said AI’s productivity gains will severely impact software development. Zoho is building language models to deploy in its applications using Nvidia’s graphic processing units (GPUs) and platform.
