Downtrading hits FMCG growth in September quarter

The FMCG sector in India saw a decline in consumption in 5 out of 6 categories in the September quarter, mainly due to downtrading and lower demand in rural areas

MUMBAI: Consumption in 5 out of the 6 FMCG categories tracked by retail intelligence firm Bizom was impacted in the September quarter, reflecting the scars of downtrading from pre-festive months.
Although the tide appears to have turned last month ahead of the festive season, categories like beverages and branded commodities pulled down sales growth for the sector in the September quarter to minus 2.3% year-on-year due to the extended shadow of downtrading.
