India to get E-passports soon

India is all set to mark a significant digital shift with the introduction of new e-passports under Passport Seva Programme 2.0 by year-end. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming e-passports.

What is E-passport?

The new E-passport will come equipped with an integrated chip, which stores the biometric data (photograph and fingerprints) of the individual. This will improve the security and will make passports difficult to forge at international borders, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said.

E-passports: ‘Ease of living’

In June 2023, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared a tweet in which Jaishankar highlighted this initiative enhancing ‘Ease of living’ in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PSP in line with govt’s ‘Digital India’ goal: Jaishankar

Jaishankar said that the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) is playing a significant role in the government’s aim of ‘Digital India’ with milestones like the mPassport Police App, mPassport Seva Mobile App, integration of PSP with DigiLocker, and more.

Finland 1st country to launch E-passports

Finland became the world’s first country to launch digital passports to provide a hassle-free international travel experience. Finnish travellers can travel to the UK using E-passports instead of physical passports.

Other countries developing E-passports

Similar to Finland, the UK, the US, South Korea and Poland are also working on digital passport projects, according to a report.
