BharatGen wins Rs 988.6 crore under IndiaAI Mission
BENGALURU: BharatGen, India's first government-backed multimodal sovereign AI initiative, was awarded Rs 988.6 crore in funding by the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY).
The announcement was made by Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on Friday. The allocation makes BharatGen the largest beneficiary of the Rs 1,500 crore IndiaAI Mission 2025, underscoring its central role in shaping India's sovereign AI ecosystem.
With this funding, BharatGen will build advanced AI models, including large language and multimodal models with up to 1 trillion parameters, alongside smaller models designed for domain-specific use cases. The initiative will also accelerate India-focused technologies such as text-to-speech, speech recognition, and vision-language tools, with applications spanning agriculture, governance, finance, healthcare, and education.
