Attention FASTag users! NHAI rolls out new rules for KYV process; here’s what has changed
FASTag users will no longer face service disruption for not completing vehicle verification, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) revising the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process to make it simpler and more user-friendly.
FASTag, a device fixed on a vehicle’s windscreen, enables automatic toll payment using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, allowing motorists to pass through plazas without stopping for cash transactions.
Under the revised rules issued by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), the following changes have been implemented:
If customers find it difficult to upload documents or complete KYV on their own, the NHAI has directed banks to take the lead. Issuing banks are required to contact users proactively and assist with the process. In addition, drivers can reach the National Highway Helpline at 1033 to raise complaints or seek guidance.
On its website, HDFC Bank explains the requirement, stating, “KYV (Know Your Vehicle) is a regulatory requirement for all FASTag customers to upload specific images related to their FASTag. This is introduced to ensure that the FASTag has been issued on the correct vehicle, vehicle number, and the FASTag has been affixed to the windshield. As per guidelines, KYV will be valid for three years. After three years, Re-KYV will be due, and you will have to re-upload the images.”
Highlighting the importance for verification, ICICI Bank stated, “As per regulations, it is mandatory to complete KYV verification. You need to ensure that all images uploaded are clear and correct. The KYV images will be verified by the Bank and if any application is declined based on the Bank’s sole discretion, your FASTag will be hotlisted (you will not be able to use your FASTag at toll plazas and you must pay the penalty imposed by regulatory authorities). To remove the FASTag from the hotlist, you need to upload the correct documents again. Once verified and approved, your FASTag will be removed from the hotlist.”

Under the revised rules issued by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), the following changes have been implemented:
- FASTag services will remain active even if the KYV process is pending. Users will be given adequate time to complete verification instead of facing a sudden suspension.
- Removal of multiple photo uploads. Motorists driving cars, jeeps or vans no longer need to provide side images of their vehicles. The new requirement asks only for a front photograph that clearly shows the FASTag and the vehicle number plate.
- The process has also been linked to Vahan, the national vehicle database. When customers enter the vehicle number, chassis number or mobile number, the system will automatically retrieve the Registration Certificate (RC) details. If several vehicles are linked to the same mobile number, the user can select the specific one for KYV completion.
