The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) - the body that markets brand Amul - has been ranked 13th amongst the top milk processors in 2016 by the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN), a global dairy research network.

In 2014, the federation - the apex marketing body of all district dairy unions of Gujarat - was ranked at 15th position.

"Going by our current growth in procurement and business, we hope to get into the top ten list when the new ranking is published in 2018," GCMMF's managing director R S Sodhi told TOI.

Amul is now a US $ 5 billion brand with GCMMF's own annual turnover at Rs 23,000 crore while that of the entire Amul family including all the dairy unions of Gujarat at Rs 33,000 crore.

"We are operating mainly in one state of India whereas all other companies are multi country and multi locations. Yet, our ranking is improving," said Sodhi, adding that the federation is expecting its procurement to grow by 10-12 % while it is expecting its annual turnover to grow at 17-18% in coming years.

It is worth mentioning here that Amul had first entered this list in 2011 at 18th rank when its milk intake volume was at 3.4 million metric tonnes per annum. "This volume has almost doubled now as our milk intake has reached 6.5 million metric tonnes per annum ," said Sodhi.

Like the 2014 ranking, United States' Dairy Farmers of America topped the chart even in 2016 with 28.1 million tonnes milk intake enjoying 3.6 % of the total market share of world's total milk production.

New Zealand-based Fonterra is at the number two position with 22.1 million tonnes milk intake and 2.8 % market share globally.

IFCN top 20 milk processor list is biannually released with thorough validated data and comparable variables which makes this list unique in the dairy economic world.
