Rising inflation may have burnt a hole in your pocket but the Economic Survey shows how thalis have become more affordable

This year’s Economic Survey analysed the average price of vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis and found food has become more affordable. The survey shows that in 2006-07, an average Indian worker had to spend 70% of her daily wage to afford a vegetarian thali for five individuals. This decreased to 50% in 2019-20 (April to October). Similarly, a non-vegetarian thali, which used to cost 93% of the daily wage in 2006-07, costs 79% now — still a huge portion of an average Indian’s earnings. The share has again been rising since last year.
