An averagely-performing economy won’t give New Delhi freedom of policy action

India’s being wooed by all sides – senior ministers from both Israel and Iran are visiting India barely a few days apart; India’s prominent engagement with the West via platforms like the Quad keeps growing, even as oil and fertiliser imports from a sanctions-ravaged Russia get a boost.

But also, tough questions are being asked about India having to “take a stand, make choices, choose a side”, one way or another. Western sceptics are doubling down on an old shibboleth – Will India be a dependable ally of the US in a rules-based international order?
