Art and fashion get creative for a cause -- raising funds for breast cancer awareness

Be it the world of art or fashion, sensibilities appear to be changing -- at least on the face of it. Despite rapid commercialisation, there seem to be some who are willing to lend a helping hand.
With the breast cancer month coming up in October, over 150 names from the art world like MF Husain, Paritosh Sen among others, have come forward to spread awareness about the cause, as has fashion house Satya Paul. Spearheading the twin efforts are two ladies who have survived to tell their tales of combating the deadly disease -- Dr Tarana Kubchandani and Devika Bhojwani.

"I was just a random person calling up artists, asking them to help a little known art gallery owner for the cause of breast cancer," says Dr Tarana, who runs the gallery Art and Soul. "They immediately consented. I have been collecting their works for the last one year." Artist Ramkumar, who had stopped painting, also produced a piece of work. The commission earned on the sale of these paintings will go to the NGO Passages Cancer Health Program which has been working towards spreading awareness about the disease. Money has even come towards a two-and-a-half minute documentary to be hosted by Diana Hayden.

For Devika Bhojwani and her Women''s Cancer Initiative -- TATA Memorial Hospital -- the theme is ''Think Pink'' based on which Satya Paul has designed shows that will be hosted across four metros, culminating in Mumbai. Even some art pieces in pink will be up for auction and part of the proceeds will go towards the cause. "It is not just about raising funds but about spreading awareness about a disease," says Devika. "It''s important for people to know that cancer doesn''t necessarily mean the end of life."

As for whether there has been an increased awareness about social issues among the corporate world, Sanjeev Kapoor, MD of Satya Paul, says, "We deal in women''s apparel and this is a cause very close to our heart. It is good that more people are coming forward to spread the message."

There is no denying the effort of two ladies who have survived cancer and have taken it upon themselves to disperse information. As Tarana concludes, "God forbid, but if it happens to you, you should have the required information."
