In what was one of the biggest achievements for Indian sports overall, Sindhu finally carved her name in the history of the sport by becoming the World champion in 2019. Sindhu - the first Indian shuttler to win gold at the Worlds - was third time lucky after losing back-to-back finals to her nemesis Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in 2017 and 2018.

Sindhu also became only the second woman after

Zhang Ning

to win five medals at the world championships (2013 - Bronze. 2014 - Bronze. 2017 - Silver. 2018 - Silver. 2019 - Gold). She also finished as the runner-up at the Indonesia Open 2019.

In 2019, Sai Praneeth scripted history by becoming the first Indian male shuttler in 36 years to win a medal in the prestigious BWF World Championships. Sai won a bronze medal in the tournament. Before him, Prakash Padukone had won a bronze medal in 1983. Due to his impressive show, the 27-year-old shuttler was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2019. In March 2019, Praneeth won a silver medal at the Swiss Open Super 300 event, after losing to Shi Yuqi of China in the summit clash.
