IT jobs and call centre placements are bringing large numbers to Bangalore. The move means better lifestyles and prospects for most people. But it's also spawning a breed of 'new' Bangaloreans, struggling to come to grips with relocation blues.

Loneliness is a major problem, what with the fast life and high work pressure which don''t always allow for socialising and settling in smoothly.<br /><br />Housewife and freelance journalist P Radha (name changed) was startled when a young woman approached her in a bookstore in a mall recently and told her all about herself. She was from Chandigarh. Her husband worked in a BPO. "She simply wanted to talk to someone," says Radha. She adds, " She may just confide in the wrong sort of stranger and land into trouble. With society becoming so predatory, this is risky behaviour." The woman even gave Radha her phone number and e-mail address.<br /><br />Another married woman shifted with her husband, an IT professional, to Bangalore a couple of years ago. The woman would pour out her heart to an aunt who would tell her, "Life in the industry is like that, you need to adjust... other wives are bearing it." The woman went to a counsellor and cried during most of the first session.<br /><br />"She is in a state of extreme emotion. The first few sessions will be spent in understanding her and conveying to her that she is being understood," says counsellor Dinesh Kumar.
