born in rajasthan, he was trained in music by ustad jamal khan of the senia gharana after which went on to build a vast and varied repertoire that comprises gurbani, kirtans and bhajans. he''s sung with other legends; sajda with lata mangeshkar and the recently released <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">dil </span>with lata and asha bhosle. his albums have earned him gold and platinum discs apart from accolades from universities, governments and music associations for his rich contribution to indian music. at the concert at the chowdiah memorial hall, where he will perform songs from <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">samvedna, </span>poems written by prime minister atal behari vajpayee, jagjit singh has promised to sing some of his evergreen ghazals and songs as well. speaking about how this album came about, jagjit singh says he had earlier sung two songs for <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">nai disha </span>which too had lyrics by the prime minister. "then i thought of one exclusive album. i got atalji''s books and selected some singable numbers. later on i met him to ask about his source of inspiration and why he wrote in the first place. and then i mentioned the album and atalji just said, `let''s do it''. he didn''t need much convincing," says jagjit, describing the prime minister as a down-to-earth person. "his poems do not reflect that he is the prime minister of our country. in his poems he has realised the pain of others," he says. jagjit singh says putting this album together has been a most fulfilling task. "i would even say it is the best album i have had till date, right from the arrangements to the poetry which is the highlight of this album, it is very good," he explains. the music company also decided to have amitabh bachchan do an introduction for the album. "when the pm is involved, everybody wants to be a part of the work," says jagjit singh. </div> </div>
