After the horrific Ahmedabad Iskon flyover accident, the AMC (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation) has now become strict towards people who drive on the wrong side. In its latest move, it has installed the first set of 'tyre killers' in the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat to address the issue. The govt executed this move after the high court suggested measures such as tyre killers to curb wrong-side driving.

What are tyre killers and how do they work?
Tyre killers are similar to regular speed breakers but have spikes on one side. They work as normal speed bumpers for cars or bikes driving on the correct side, but for the cars and bikes driving on the wrong side, tyre killers will rip holes in the tyres. These are designed to prevent wrong-side driving, which is common nowadays in Ahmedabad, especially at the city's exit points of underpasses. The first 'tyre killers' was installed on a service road next to the flyover in Chankyapuri, Ahmedabad.

In a conversation with TNN, an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation official said," The suggestion to install tyre killers came from the high court. We are yet to identify more sites. Further, he added, "Anandnagar, Satellite, Paldi, and a major part of SG Road and Sindhu Bhavan Road (SBR) see vehicles driving on the wrong side. The roads are wide enough that even while driving on the wrong side people don't slow down. U-turns at underpasses are sometimes quite a distance away and people often resort to driving on the wrong side. Tyre killers could act as a deterrent."

Apart from Ahmedabad, 'tyre killers' have also been installed in Pune and Noida earlier, but safety concerns were raised. Even Pune police have completely banned this tool witnessing the great risk of injury.Discover everything about the automotive world at Times of India.
