Retrieve your impounded overage cars for Rs 10,000 soon: Delhi Govt nears policy approval
The Delhi government is on the verge of finalizing a policy for the release of impounded overage vehicles by the Transport Department, officials revealed on Tuesday. Aligned with the Delhi High Court's directives, the policy proposes fines of Rs 5,000 for two-wheelers and Rs 10,000 for four-wheelers to facilitate the release of impounded vehicles, reported PTI citing an official close to the matter.
These impounded vehicles were seized by enforcement teams for violations such as parking in public spaces or driving on public roads. Vehicle owners must provide an undertaking that they will refrain from parking their vehicles in public spaces or driving them on public roads. Additionally, individuals must inform the Transport Department when taking an overage car for repairs and utilize a hired lorry or carriage for transportation.
Furthermore, the government may offer a six to 12-month window for obtaining a no-objection certificate to relocate vehicles outside Delhi to prevent scrapping. Approximately 50 lakh vehicles were deregistered between January and October of the previous year, with over 15,000 vehicles impounded to date.
The state government is formulating a policy to address cases where owners commit to not using their vehicles in the national capital. The Supreme Court had previously imposed a ban in 2018 on diesel and petrol vehicles older than 10 and 15 years, respectively, in Delhi, with impoundment for violations. A 2014 order from the National Green Tribunal prohibits parking vehicles older than 15 years in public places.
