Electric vehicle manufacturer Ola Electric has commenced the construction of its 115-acre Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu.
The company has set up the first pillar of the cell manufacturing facility, which it claims will be one of the fastest built factories with production expected to begin from early 2024. Initially, the company is aiming at a 5 GWh capacity, which will be further expanded to 100 GWh at full capacity.
Recently, the EV maker signed a pact with the Government of Tamil Nadu to further its manufacturing capabilities across two-wheelers, four-wheeler and battery cells.
Ola has also invested in cell & battery research and development and has a R&D facility in Bangalore.
At present, the company has three electric two-wheelers in their product portfolio - the Ola S1, S1 Pro, and the S1 Air, which is the more affordable offering amongst the three. In its bid to increase the localisation levels for its EVs, the company had announced that it will be manufacturing battery cells in-house.
Furthermore, the company made headlines in August, last year, when it announced its electric car, which it is aiming for 2024 launch. The Gigafactory is Ola’s second factory in Tamil Nadu, following the FutureFactory - a 500-acre manufacturing facility for its two-wheelers.
Recently, Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO and Founder, Ola Electric, teased a new S1 electric scooter ahead of its launch in July.
