Gadkari warns action on Li-ion battery waste dumping, backs India to become no.1 EV exporter by 2028
Addressing the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has warned electric vehicle (EV) makers that the centre will take serious note of the negative impact the dumping of lithium-ion battery waste has on the environment. The minister also mentioned about the ongoing work on different chemistries, including aluminum steel ion batteries and aluminum-air technology.
Responding to the concerns regarding the ill effects of dumping of li-ion battery waste during the session, Gadkari emphasized the government's promotion of a circular economy for waste recycling, which was brought forward during the budget session by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier this year. These initiatives encompass car scrapping, rubber recycling and the usage of recycled plastic in the construction of roads.
Congress leader Ranjeet Ranjan cited a research report during the question hour, outlining the adverse health effects on workers involved in lithium-ion battery manufacturing and the environmental impact of dumping these batteries after their life cycle. Gadkari responded that there is no such report with the centre and if anything of such sort comes to their notice then it will be taken seriously and will be addressed promptly.
“We will take serious note of the issue and work out recycling of lithium-ion battery waste,” he added.
Gadkari further stated that India aims to become a leading exporter of electric cars, buses, and trucks in the next five years. He then stressed on the need to reduce fossil fuel imports, which cost over Rs 16 lakh crore annually, and acknowledged the pollution challenges faced by cities like Delhi. He also highlighted that Jammu & Kashmir possesses the sixth-largest reserve of lithium-ion, and India currently imports 1,200 tonnes of lithium-ion.
The MoRTH minister also spoke about the cost advantages of electric vehicles, with the cost of running an electric vehicle being significantly lower than that of petrol or diesel vehicles. At present, the cost difference between EVs and petrol/diesel-powered vehicles stands at Rs 10 for EV for the same distance run by a traditional ICE vehicle for Rs 100-110. With inputs from PTI.
“We will take serious note of the issue and work out recycling of lithium-ion battery waste,” he added.

Part-1. .Everyone is talking about, worried about and doing something about Recycling of Batteries, but No body is talking about, worried about or doing anything about Recycling the Kinetic or Braking Energy!.. .Air Pollution, Climate change and Global Warming are the direct results of wasteful use of Energy and Fuel in Automobiles, that still use Heat Emitting and Energy Wasting Friction Brakes to Stop every time, and then (Stupidly) use a lot of New Energy, Engine/Motor Power and Fuel or Electricity, to Accelerate once again; instead of Recovering most of their Kinetic Energy while Braking, and Reusing that same Energy for Powering the Next Acceleration!.. .Our Automobiles made a Huge Energy Mistake right from their creation more than a Century and half ago!, of not recovering their Kinetic Energy while braking, and then using a lot of New Energy, Engine Power and Fuel for their Next Acceleration. This Simple Energy Mistake has unfortunately remained till date in all our Automobiles even after a entury of Motoring and many Oil Crisis and Wars, as well as the huge Air Pollution and Climate Crisis; but is sadly being repeated even in those Electric vehicles, with even Latest of these Green Cars still using Energy Wasting Friction Brakes!, that too on all their F&R wheels!. .There can be No Place for Energy wasting Friction Brakes in our Automobiles in 21st Century, whatever the Energy or Fuel - Petrol, Diesel, CNG, LNG, Hydrogen or Bio Fuel; and definitely not in those Electric Vehicles. (Friction Brakes that waste away all the Kinetic Energy while slowing down and stopping, and send it as Heat in to the Atmosphere, adding to the Warming of the Environment and the Planet).. .All Automobiles can and should Accelerate by using only the Braking Energy (Recovered and Stored in Transmission) without using any New Energy, Fuel and Emission, or without using/consuming any of the Battery Power for the EVs.. .Time for Automakers to get rid of those Energy Wasting Friction Brakes from all those Energy Guzzling Electric Vehicles, and thereby reduce the use/wastage of a lot of Battery Power, Electricity,Gas or Coal; if not also from the rest of our Automobiles that use IC Engine and Fuel and thereby reduce the Air Pollution, Heat and Emission from the rest of our Automobiles; but by doing so, reduce the burden on Electric Vehicles, Electric Grid, Batteries and Gas (or use of Coal).Read allPost comment
