Bengaluru police deploys AI-based traffic control system: Here's how it works
In a bid to tackle Bengaluru's notorious traffic congestion, the Bengaluru Traffic Police has announced the deployment of the Bengaluru Adaptive Traffic Control System (BATCS). This system is designed to optimise traffic flow and reduce delays across the city. The BATCS project was initiated in May 2024.
The first phase of the project involves upgrading 136 existing traffic junctions and installing 29 new ones, covering a total of 165 signals. The system is expected to be fully operational by January 2025. Once the first phase is completed, the system will be expanded to cover an additional 400 junctions in a phased rollout. So far, 60 junctions in key areas like Basavanagudi, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, and Hudson Circle have been upgraded.
The BATCS uses AI to manage traffic in real-time by adjusting signal timings based on the current traffic conditions. Sensors and cameras installed at key junctions monitor the volume of vehicles approaching from different directions. This data is then processed to dynamically alter the signal timings, ensuring smoother traffic flow by reducing waiting times and minimizing congestion. Additionally, BATCS can synchronize signals along major roads, creating "green waves" that allow vehicles to move with fewer stops. The system also features central monitoring, allowing authorities to quickly respond to changing traffic patterns or emergencies, and it can prioritize emergency vehicles if needed. (Inputs from PTI)
