NHAI alert: How to avoid the fake FASTag passes scam and protect your vehicle
A very important warning has also been issued by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) regarding a spate of scams that have increased regarding the annual pass on FASTag. Scammers are setting up fake sites, links, and unofficial platforms that claim to be selling the one-year annual pass on the FASTag system. Customers who fall prey to these fraudsters can suffer financial losses as well as have their private details, reportedly to the tune of up to Rs. 3,000, stolen or misused without their consent.
For a safe transaction, users of the vehicles who want to acquire or renew their annual pass via the FASTag must use the official channels, mainly through the Rajmargyatra mobile app. Knowledge of the right procedure, therefore, combined with the right measures of safety, is necessary to avoid cheating and ensure safe and convenient tolls on all national highways.
NHAI has made it clear that the FASTag Annual Pass can only be purchased through the Rajmargyatra Mobile App. None of the other websites, social media links, or messaging platforms has the authority to generate the pass.
Fraudsters have been known to create malicious links that seem genuine and have been duping people into entering details such as vehicle registration, FASTag numbers, and payment information. The warning has been triggered as there has been a rise in complaints being registered over fake FASTags annual passes. The warning has been shared on the social media platform X with a warning to users to avoid clicking on unknown links and third-party sellers by NHAI:
Authorities clarified that sharing the registration number of the vehicle, or the FASTag, or the payment information other than the Rajmargyatra app for the annual pass might lead to economic fraud and theft of information. Only the Rajmargyatra app has been authenticated to sell the annual pass.
The FASTag annual pass is intended for private cars, jeeps, and vans, allowing cashless and seamless toll payments. According to the Indian Highway Management Company Limited, the pass is valid for one year or 200 toll trips, whichever limit is reached first.
The pass reduces waiting times at toll plazas, supports digital transactions, and ensures a safer and more convenient journey on national highways. It is designed to encourage efficient toll management while providing convenience to frequent highway travellers.
