was launched in the country. Today, Union Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari was seen arriving at the Parliament in one to promote the concept of hydrogen fuel cell EVs (FCEVs) as a future of mobility.

The minister stated that 'manufacturing of green hydrogen will begin in India, imports will be curbed and new employment opportunities will be created. He added that the government has initiated Rs 3,000 crore and will soon begin the export of hydrogen.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, along with the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT), is conducting a pilot project to study and evaluate the FCEV Toyota Mirai, which runs on hydrogen, on Indian roads and climatic conditions.

Gadkari had also previously said that he would start using the Toyota Mirai himself, while Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) will be supplying hydrogen for the vehicle.

The Mirai is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell battery pack and is capable of providing a range of up to 600 km on a single full charge. The Hydrogen breaks down into electricity which powers the sedan, and the only residue is water that comes out of the Mirai’s tailpipe. The pilot project aims to provide hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles for commercial purposes in the country.

This is a first of its kind project in the country aimed at spreading awareness about Hydrogen, FCEV technology and disseminating its benefits to support hydrogen-based society for India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway said in a statement earlier.
