Delhi Traffic Police to use 328 AI-enabled cameras for better traffic enforcement
Delhi Traffic Police is revamping its surveillance system with 328 new AI-powered cameras to become operational by June. The advanced equipment will identify multiple infractions in real-time, such as riding without helmets, driving without seatbelts, mobile phone usage, and driving the wrong way. By making challan generation automated, the move seeks to minimize manual intervention, enabling traffic staff to concentrate on smoother road management.
With this expansion, Delhi’s total traffic camera count will rise from 334 to 662. As part of the plan, 203 cameras will monitor red-light violations at 57 intersections, while 125 speed-detection cameras will be deployed across 76 high-risk locations. These cameras will also provide video and photographic evidence, strengthening enforcement measures.
The move follows alarming road safety numbers for the year 2023, which recorded 5,834 accidents and 1,457 deaths. With the help of AI-based monitoring, Delhi Traffic Police is taking a significant leap towards safer and more well-disciplined roads.
Delhi Traffic Police to employ AI cameras to track offenders and prohibited vehicles
Delhi Traffic Police will implement the AI-based cameras for monitoring hit-and-run offenders, traffic offenders, and prohibited vehicles for the first time. The intelligent cameras, which are embedded with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), will detect 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles to more effectively enforce prevailing prohibitions.
In contrast to the existing system, which mostly catches speeding and red-light running, these new cameras will also photograph triple riding, wrong-way driving, and multiple offenses by a single car. Advanced filtering capabilities will even enable authorities to monitor cars according to their look, which can assist in investigations.
The project is undertaken by Envoys Electronics Pvt. Ltd and Aabmatica Technologies Pvt. Ltd, with a budget estimated at ₹95 crore. According to experts, these violations should be incorporated into a points-based system of penalty to deter offenders from offending again. With state-of-the-art AI surveillance, Delhi is shifting towards a safer and more responsible traffic system.
