TL;DR
- The new Apache RTR 160 4V comes in both carbureted and fuel injected versions
- The bike has been built on a race-derived platform to deliver aggressive riding dynamics
- The new four-valve engine delivers best-in-class power output of 16.8PS (for fuel injected version)
CHENNAI: TVS Motor Company on Wednesday launched the all-new 2018 model of its popular Apache RTR 160. Christened the RTR 160 4V, the bike comes with a starting price tag of Rs 81,490 for the carbureted variant and it is also available in a fuel injected trim for Rs 89,990 (both ex-showroom, Delhi).
The new motorcycle looks completely different from the outgoing version and gets significant mechanical updates as well.
This is the third premium motorcycle from TVS in the last three months after the Apache RR 310 and the Apache RTR 200 4V Race Edition 2.0 (with slipper clutch). The reason why TVS is focusing on the premium motorcycle market is that one of the four motorcycles sold in the country is a premium model, the company said in a statement.
“In over 10 years of its existence, the TVS Apache RTR series has created phenomenal customer delight. The new is an exciting addition to the TVS Apache RTR series. It is the most powerful 160cc motorcycle in India and embodies the latest racing technology with best-in-class performance. We are confident that the 4V will set the precedence with its superior performance and dynamic racing look," said KN Radhakrishnan, President and Chief Executive Officer, TVS Motor Company, at the launch.
The 2018 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V looks inspired by the bigger Apache RTR 200 4V which means that the new model is much more sportier and aggressive than before. The bike features a sharp, low-set headlamp and a muscular fuel tank cladding. The RTR 160 4V also receives the new tail lamp from its elder sibling but what makes the 160 different are the new seat cowls and a single-piece seat.
The company says that the new Apache RTR 160 4V is born of 6 times Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship winner motorcycle and gets a race-derived 'Synchro Stiff' chassis. The bike also gets a race-tuned Showa monoshock at the rear and wider tyres as well. It offers 100 section front and 130 section rear tubeless rubber for better confidence, especially while cornering.
The new TVS Apache RTR 160 4V is powered by a new four-valve engine which now gets an oil-cooled as well for better long-run performance. As we mentioned above, the engine is available with both carburetor and fuel injection (FI) options.
There is a significant improvement in the performance as compared to the previous powertrain and the new model offers a class-leading power output of 16.8PS at 8,000rpm in the FI version. The carbureted version delivers 16.5PS while the peak torque output is 14.8Nm for both the trims and it comes at 6,500rpm.
According to TVS, the new RTR 160 4V has a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio and is capable of doing a 0-60kmph sprint in just 4.73 seconds (carbureted version). The bike claims a top speed of 114kmph for the fuel injected trim while that of the base variant is 113kmph.
Other key features of the motorcycle include a fully-digital instrument cluster with lap-timer and a front petal disc brake, while the rear disc brake comes as an optional extra.
Talking about the competition in India, the new TVS Apache RTR 160 4V rivals the likes of the Bajaj Pulsar NS 160, Yamaha FZ-S, Suzuki Gixxer and the Honda CB Hornet 160R.
