Big news! Mahindra Thar electric coming soon

Mahindra & Mahindra has confirmed that the company has plans to introduce a fully-electric version of the Thar lifestyle SUV! The company has released a teaser video of the upcoming Thar electric (stylized THAR.e) which is all set to make its debut on this Independence Day i.e. August 15, 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa.




As for the teaser, the design looks futuristic which helps us believe that it will be in a purely concept form. A market launch is still probably a thing of the future, however, it will be interesting to see if Mahindra can retain the off-road cred of the regular ICE Thar for the Thar EV. The Mahindra Thar's retro appeal is one of the biggest reasons of its popularity, and it will also be interesting to know if the Thar Electric carries it over as well.




As of now, the XUV400 is the only fully-electric Mahindra SUV on sale in India, while the carmaker is working on a range of other new EVs like BE.05, BE.07, and so on. The Thar EV will likely be built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, and could even make use of dual electric motors (one on each axle) for an all-wheel drive configuration.

The Mahindra Thar is currently offered with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine putting out 128 hp of maximum power as well as a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol motor generating 150 hp. There is also a smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine putting out 117 hp, available with the RWD setup.
