Volkswagen Tayron R-line launch soon: Five key things to know
Volkswagen India recently unveiled the new Volkswagen Tayron R-Line three-row SUV in the Indian market. The new Tayron will sit at the top of Volkswagen’s India lineup, positioned above the Tiguan R-Line. For buyers considering a seven-seat SUV with a German badge and a more premium positioning, the Tayron R-Line emerges as a new option to consider. If you’re planning to buy one, here are the top five key highlights you need to know.
Volkswagen Tayron R-line: Design
The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line can be seen as a stretched, seven-seat derivative of the Tiguan R-Line, with larger overall dimensions to make room for a third row of seats. Up front, its design closely mirrors the Tiguan R-Line, though a subtly revised grille helps set it apart. The illuminated Volkswagen emblem, paired with a full-width LED light bar, adds a distinct visual identity, while the bumper is largely finished in gloss black for a sportier appearance.
From the side, the Tayron’s longer silhouette clearly signals its three-row layout. It rides on 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels similar to those on the Tiguan R-Line, which fill the wheel arches well, complemented by slim gloss black cladding. Smaller styling touches include an R badge on the front doors and chrome accents around the window line, adding a premium touch.
At the rear, the Tayron R-Line again looks very simple compared to the Tiguan R-Line and follows a clean and modern design approach. The standout feature is the connected LED tail-lamp setup with pixel-style lighting elements, giving the SUV a distinctive night-time signature. The bumper, finished in gloss black, mirrors the treatment seen at the front, tying the overall design together.
Volkswagen Tayron R-line: Interior and features
Moving inside, again the interior too is very similar to the Tiguan R-line and features a large 15-inch touchscreen that is angled towards the driver and controls most of the vehicle’s key functions. While the leather-appointed front seats retain the massage function seen on the Tiguan R-Line, the Tayron replaces seat heating with front-seat ventilation, a feature better suited to Indian conditions. Other highlights include a fully digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, customisable ambient lighting with up to 30 colour options, and Matrix LED lighting technology. In terms of practicality, the SUV offers up to 850 litres of boot space with the third row folded down.
Volkswagen Tayron R-line: Engine
Talking about the engine, the Tayron is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that produces 204 hp and 320 Nm of torque. The engine comes paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox, which sends power to all four wheels. The same engine also does the job in the Tiguan R-line.
Volkswagen Tayron R-line: Platform, dimensions and safety
Built on the MQB EVO architecture shared with the Tiguan R-Line, it benefits from an extended wheelbase of 2,789 mm, around 109 mm longer to accommodate a third row of seating. The VW Tayron R-Line measures 4792 mm in length, 1866 mm in width, 1665 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2789 mm. Ground clearance is rated at 181 mm and has a boot space of 345 litres (with 3 rows up) 850 litres (with folded 3rd row).
Safety features include Level 2 ADAS, nine airbags, ESC, hill-start and hill-descent controls, a 360-degree camera and more. The Tayron also has secured a five-star overall crash safety rating in Euro NCAP, achieving scores of 87 per cent for adult occupant protection and 85 per cent for child occupant protection.
Volkswagen Tayron R-line: Expected price, launch date, rivals
The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will arrive in India via the CKD route, a move that should help keep pricing competitive. The SUV is likely to be priced between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom) and the price announcement is expected to happen sometime in February 2026. The local assembly of the Tayron R-line is underway at the company’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant. Once introduced, it will take on rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, the upcoming MG Majestor, Jeep Meridian and the Skoda Kodiaq in the Indian market
