VinFast Announces Plans for its Maiden Electric Vehicle Factory in India
VinFast, the Vietnamese carmaker, is set to establish its inaugural electric vehicle (EV) factory in India as part of a planned $2 billion investment to tap into the burgeoning market. According to a statement released on Saturday, the facility will be located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with an initial commitment of $500 million for the first five years of the project.
Vietnam's first domestically owned car manufacturer aims to compete with industry leaders like Tesla as it ventures into global markets. However, VinFast's international expansion has encountered challenges, including a significant portion of its first-half sales in the previous year being bought by a company affiliated with its parent company.
Listed on the Nasdaq in August, VinFast gained global attention as its valuation experienced a rapid rise and subsequent decline. The company's statement outlined the ambitious goal for the VinFast Tamil Nadu project to evolve into a premier EV production hub with an annual capacity of up to 150,000 units. Construction of the plant is anticipated to commence this year, creating around 3,500 local jobs.
The initiative is a crucial component of VinFast's strategy to establish a robust presence in key markets and enhance its supply chain for global expansion. Tamil Nadu's chief minister, M.K. Stalin, lauded the deal, hailing it as a significant leap in the state's industrial development.
Simultaneously, VinFast appointed Pham Nhat Vuong, chairman of parent company Vingroup, as its new CEO on Saturday. Vuong, Vietnam's wealthiest individual with a net worth of around $4.6 billion according to Forbes, will directly oversee VinFast's operations, including global production, sales, and marketing. This move sees Le Thi Thu Thuy, who held the CEO position since 2021, transitioning to the role of chairwoman of the board of directors. Vuong had previously provided VinFast with a $1 billion grant in April of the preceding year.
