In a significant move toward expanding their electric vehicle portfolio, Suzuki Motor’s Indian unit is set to deliver its first EV to Toyota Motor by spring 2025. Produced at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, the SUV-style EV will be exclusively manufactured in India, marking the first time Suzuki and Toyota have collaborated on an electric vehicle.
This new model has been co-developed by Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu, and will carry a 60 kWh battery pack, although specific range details have yet to be disclosed. The SUV will join Toyota’s ambitious lineup as part of the 10 battery-powered models it plans to launch by 2026. While Suzuki has yet to offer EVs globally, it has been selling hybrid models in India, manufactured by Toyota’s Indian unit.
The Gujarat facility is set to add a new production line capable of producing 250,000 EV units annually, underscoring Maruti Suzuki’s intentions to supply this vehicle worldwide, including markets in Japan and Europe. This partnership between Suzuki and Toyota, rooted in their long history of collaboration across traditional vehicles, now extends to battery-electric SUVs and aims to further both automakers' efforts in promoting a carbon-neutral future.
Toyota has reported more than 108,000 battery-powered EV sales worldwide this year so far, comprising 1.5% of its global sales, including its premium Lexus brand. This partnership move with Suzuki aligns with Toyota’s strategic push to boost its presence in the EV sector, particularly in the fast-growing SUV segment.
