Mercedes-Benz teases next-gen S-Class with massive grille: Details
German Automaker Mercedes-Benz has teased the next-generation S-Class with a gigantic illuminated front grille. In contrast to the grille design showcased on the new GLC EV at last month’s Munich IAA show, the one seen here looks substantially larger, stretching from the lip of the bonnet right down to the bottom of the front bumper. We expected Mercedes-Benz would stick with the familiar W223 design and introduce a subtle mid-life refresh. However, the brand seems to have taken a bold detour, forgoing a facelift in favour of a next-generation S-Class with a fresh and distinctive design direction.
Talking about the teased image, Mercedes-Benz Group’s chief designer, Gorden Wagener, shared teaser images on Instagram, captioning them: “Remember the iconic grille we unveiled at the IAA in Munich? Think of it as the spark for a new wave of creativity. Brace yourself for what’s coming next.” The teased image showcases the bold, assertive design of the new S-Class, which seems to pay homage to Mercedes-Benz’s grand flagships from the 1960s - particularly the W100 - with its commanding grille, stretched wheelbase, and limousine-like proportions.
The design cues also echo classic S-Class ancestors such as the W111/W112 and W108/W109 sedans, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz’s heritage in luxury styling. Traditionally, the iconic hood star appears on higher-end models such as the Mercedes-Maybach, S-Class, and GLS models. Performance-focused variants typically skip this ornament, suggesting the teased vehicle is unlikely to be an AMG.
The teaser also reveals headlights with a shape reminiscent of the S-Class, featuring an internal three-pointed star LED cluster, a pronounced front splitter, and sizable black alloy wheels that add to its aggressive stance. Its fully illuminated, fully enclosed grille strongly suggests an electric powertrain hidden beneath the sculpted hood. Another teaser highlights the pronounced rear arches, which likely hint that it will be a two-door coupe configuration. The door handles are positioned unusually close to the side vents, hinting at rear-hinged doors and frameless windows.
