Mahindra Vision S spied testing: Compact Scorpio-like styling revealed
Mahindra’s upcoming Vision S has been spotted testing again on Indian roads, indicating that development of the compact SUV is progressing. The model is expected to strengthen the company’s presence in the sub-four-metre SUV segment, where the XUV 3XO is currently its sole offering. The Vision S was first showcased as a concept at Mahindra’s Freedom NU event, previewing the brand’s future direction for compact SUVs. Although the production version is expected to undergo some changes, recent test mules suggest it has retained its upright proportions and rugged design elements.
Recent spy shots indicate that Mahindra has largely retained the Vision S concept's overall shape and proportions. The test vehicle continues to feature an upright stance, boxy silhouette and traditional SUV-like proportions, suggesting that the production version is expected to remain close to the original concept.
However, it’s hard to tell anything about its design in detail due to the extensive camouflage covering the prototype. Key elements such as the grille, lighting units, bumpers, alloy wheels and rear design remain concealed. While the test mule reveals some of the vehicle’s proportions and stance, most styling details are still hidden. Other exterior highlights are expected to include sleek LED headlamps, fog lamps, front and rear skid plates, a sculpted bonnet, 17-inch alloy wheels, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, LED tail-lamps and an integrated roof spoiler. However, most of these elements remain hidden under camouflage, and their final design and specifications will only become clear closer to the SUV’s launch.
There is no any information regarding the interior. However, the SUV is expected to feature a dashboard design that complements its upright and rugged exterior styling. Expected features include a touchscreen infotainment system with AdrenoX connected car technology, a fully digital instrument cluster, a sunroof, automatic climate control, wireless charging and other convenience-focused equipment. A clearer picture of the cabin and feature list is likely to emerge closer to the SUV’s launch.
The upcoming SUV will be based on Mahindra’s NU_IQ monocoque platform, and Mahindra says it has been designed to accommodate multiple powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, hybrid and fully electric setups. Initially, it’s expected to borrow engine options from the XUV 3XO. Petrol variants are expected to use a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. Diesel versions could be powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel unit. Gearbox options will include a 6-speed manual, 6-speed torque converter automatic and an AMT.
The Vision S is expected to target a relatively underserved area of the sub-four-metre SUV market, where most offerings focus on crossover-like styling. Buyers looking for a more upright and rugged SUV design currently have limited choices. While the Thar appeals to this audience, its three-door layout can be a constraint for family use. The Vision S will combine a more practical package with traditional SUV styling cues. Mahindra has retained the boxy proportions and design elements first seen on the concept version.
