Hyundai Motor unveiled its new passenger hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept, named Initium, on Thursday. The vehicle boasts an extended driving range and significant hydrogen storage capacity, with plans for release in the first half of next year, according to Yonhap news agency.
Initium, derived from the Latin word for "beginning," signifies Hyundai's commitment to leading the shift toward a hydrogen-based society. At a media event in Goyang, Hyundai President and CEO Chang Jae-hoon emphasized that hydrogen serves as an accessible energy source for future generations.
Chang highlighted Hyundai's 27-year dedication to hydrogen technology, citing the energy's potential value. The design of Initium combines strength and resilience while showcasing the purity of hydrogen. It features a spacious interior, increased hydrogen tank capacity, and aerodynamic wheels, allowing a driving range of over 650 kilometers. Enhancements to the fuel cell system and battery enable a maximum motor output of 150 kilowatts, alongside improved rear seating comfort.
Hyundai plans to publicly display Initium at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in China next month. The company has been involved in hydrogen technology since 1998, launching its first hydrogen vehicle in 2000 with UTC Power. In 2013, Hyundai became the first to mass-produce hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and introduced the Nexo in 2018.
Chang stated that the adoption of hydrogen energy in the automotive sector is inevitable, despite current business uncertainties regarding electric and eco-friendly vehicles. He expressed that while hydrogen vehicles may not be immediately profitable, they are crucial for achieving a hydrogen society, positioning this mission as a priority for Hyundai. He also emphasized the importance of advancing technologies to maintain global leadership in the field.
