How much will the Tesla Model 3 car cost in India? Check out its expected price and other important information
As Tesla prepares for its highly awaited foray into India, a report by international capital markets firm CLSA shows that the cost of its base model will be between Rs 35-40 lakh. This is calculated with lower import duties, road tax, and insurance. Even with the price drop thanks to duty reduction, the road price will still be high enough to make it a premium segment choice for Indian consumers over domestic-produced electric cars. This pricing level would influence Tesla's marketability in a price-sensitive nation like India, where keeping prices low will be important in mass adoption of electric vehicles.
Tesla's Model 3 costing approximately USD 35,000 (approximately Rs 30.4 lakh) in the United States will surely experience a steep price increase after its importation to India due to import duty, taxes, and other costs. The Model 3's price will be 20-50% more than some local rival electric vehicles, such as the Mahindra XEV 9e, Hyundai e-Creta, and Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, asserts CLSA. Despite the expected reduction in import tariffs to 15-20%, these hikes will make the vehicle much more expensive than locally produced EVs, limiting its popularity among the budget-conscious Indian consumers.
The research indicates that in an effort to remain operational in the Indian market, Tesla will need to establish local manufacturing.
The India EV policy can go a long way towards that because it promises to relax the import duties (by up to 15%) to 8,000 units per annum to producers who have invested more than Rs 4,150 crore establishing locally. By setting up a manufacturing base in India, Tesla would be in a position to lower its import cost, which would allow it to offer lower prices and expand its customer base. Without this, the company may not be able to overcome the premium price and the hassle of importing cars to India.
To explain the potential issues better, CLSA compares Tesla's situation in India with the motorbike market, relating it to the Harley-Davidson X440.
At about 20% higher than the Royal Enfield Classic 350, the Harley-Davidson X440 manages to sell just 1,500 units every month, whereas the Classic 350 sells 28,000. This pricing trend suggests that Indian consumers are extremely price-conscious, and a price level greater than the current ones could hinder Tesla's growth in sales in India if it does not present competitive price points. This has been a notion that supports competitive pricing as Tesla's success catalyst in India.
Despite the aforementioned issues, Tesla is taking major steps towards its Indian market entry. The company has started recruiting workers for key positions in India, which implies it is moving closer to the inauguration of its activities in the country. First-time operations are expected to be situated in Delhi and Mumbai, two key markets that are expected to play a leading role in Tesla's plans to expand its reach within the Indian market.

Tesla could possibly likely target Indian corporates to lease/buy Tesla for their employees obliging the Jew for quidpro quo favours in America and the rest of the world.I am surprised that Bangalore and Hyderabad is not in their initial list of cities for dealerships. The starting price range of the Tesla 3 and Y seem to be in the entry level luxury car segment.
