China's BYD Considers Entering Canadian Auto Market, Regulatory Filing Reveals

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is exploring entry into the Canadian automotive market, according to a recent regulatory filing. This move comes as Canadian officials are contemplating tariffs on vehicles imported from China.

In June, Canada indicated it might follow the U.S. and EU in imposing tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles. This action is part of a broader effort to counter what Western nations perceive as unfair subsidies supporting the Chinese EV industry.

Ottawa began a public consultation on July 2 to assess the impact of potential tariffs, expressing concerns that unchecked imports could disrupt Canada's EV investments and its automotive sector’s transition.

The regulatory document did not detail the timeline for BYD’s entry into Canada or its interactions with Canadian government officials. It did, however, mention the potential application of tariffs and BYD’s plans to sell passenger EVs in the country.

Earlier this year, BYD launched the Shark, a mid-size hybrid-electric pickup truck in Mexico. Despite new U.S. tariffs on Chinese EVs, BYD’s regional chief indicated that the company is not focusing on the U.S. market.
