Car Sales April '26: Maruti, Hyundai, Kia post record numbers; Tata EVs jump 72%
India’s passenger vehicle market kicked off FY2026 on a strong note, with multiple carmakers reporting healthy year-on-year growth in April. Strong SUV demand, improving rural sentiment and rising interest in EVs played a key role, while brands like Hyundai and Kia posted their best-ever April performances. Here’s how the major players performed.
Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the market, recording its highest-ever monthly sales. The company dispatched 2,39,646 units in April 2026, with domestic sales alone touching a record 1,91,122 units. Passenger vehicle sales stood at 1,87,704 units, while exports rose to 40,054 units. The growth was driven by strong demand across segments, especially SUVs, which clocked over 55,000 units, alongside steady performance from compact cars.
Hyundai Motor India also had a strong showing, reporting its highest-ever April domestic sales at 51,902 units, up 17% year-on-year. The brand also exported 13,708 units during the month. The Venue, particularly, achieved its best-ever monthly domestic sales of 12,420 units, helping Hyundai maintain its growth momentum.
Tata Motors registered total passenger vehicle sales of 59,701 units, including 59,000 units in the domestic market, marking a 30.5% growth. A key highlight was the EV segment, where sales jumped 72.1% to 9,150 units.
Mahindra & Mahindra reported strong SUV demand, selling 56,331 units in the domestic market, reflecting an 8% growth. Overall auto volumes stood at 94,627 units, up 14% year-on-year.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor posted total sales of 32,086 units, up 17% compared to last year. Domestic sales accounted for 30,159 units, registering a solid 21% growth, although exports declined during the month.
Kia India also reported its highest-ever April sales since entering the Indian market, with 27,286 units, up 16% year-on-year. Models like the Seltos, Sonet and Carens continued to drive volumes for the brand.
JSW MG Motor India recorded 6,018 units in April, posting a modest 3% growth despite global supply chain challenges linked to geopolitical tensions.
Renault India saw one of the sharpest gains, with domestic sales doubling to 5,413 units, marking a 108% growth. New-generation models and network expansion played a key role in this surge, the brand said.
On the other hand, Nissan Motor India reported total sales of 5,388 units, including 3,203 units domestically, registering a 75% growth.
