Best-selling cars May ‘26: Sedan beats all SUVs
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire topped the sales charts in May 2026 with total dispatches of 24,546 units, registering a 36 percent year-on-year growth. The latest-generation Dzire had last year received revised styling, improved features and an upgraded safety package. It is powered by Maruti’s 1.2-litre Z-Series petrol engine and is also offered with a factory-fitted CNG option.
In second place was the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, which recorded sales of 20,686 units in May 2026. The crossover has quickly become one of Maruti’s strongest-selling Nexa products since launch. Available with both naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol engine options, the Fronx is positioned as a coupe-style compact SUV and is sold in both petrol and CNG versions. The model registered a strong 52 percent year-on-year growth.
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga retained its position as India’s highest-selling MPV with sales of 20,350 units. The three-row MPV continues to attract strong demand from large families as well as commercial buyers. Powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with petrol and CNG options, the Ertiga posted a 26 percent year-on-year increase in sales.
Tata Motors secured the fourth position with the Punch, including EV sales, which clocked 20,208 units during the month. The Punch has consistently remained one of Tata’s strongest-selling products thanks to its micro-SUV positioning and 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating. The model registered a 54 percent year-on-year growth.
The Tata Nexon finished fifth with sales of 19,100 units. Offered with petrol, diesel, CNG and electric powertrain options, the Nexon remains one of the widest-ranging compact SUVs in the country. The SUV recorded a 46 percent year-on-year growth.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno emerged as one of the fastest-growing cars in the top 10 list. The premium hatchback recorded sales of 18,396 units and posted the highest year-on-year growth among the top-selling models at 58 percent. Sold through the Nexa dealership chain, the Baleno continues to compete in the premium hatchback segment with features such as a heads-up display, 360-degree camera and more.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R continued its strong run in the hatchback segment with sales of 18,076 units in May 2026. The tall-boy hatchback remains one of India’s highest-selling cars due to its practical cabin space and fuel-efficient powertrains. The Wagon R lineup includes petrol and CNG options and recorded a 30 percent year-on-year growth.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift secured the eighth spot with total sales of 17,519 units. The latest-generation Swift was launched last year with updated styling and a new Z-Series petrol engine aimed at improving efficiency. The hatchback registered a 24 percent year-on-year increase compared to the same period last year.
Mahindra Scorpio, including both the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic, recorded combined sales of 15,774 units in May 2026. The Scorpio range continues to be one of Mahindra’s strongest-performing SUV nameplates, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 markets. The SUV lineup posted a 10 percent year-on-year growth.
Rounding off the top 10 list was the Hyundai Creta, which sold 15,253 units during the month. Hyundai recently introduced the updated Creta with refreshed styling, ADAS features and a revised cabin layout. The midsize SUV continues to be available with petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engine options, and recorded a 3 percent year-on-year increase in May 2026. It is also available as an EV.
