Nissan is rekindling classic automotive nostalgia with the upcoming redesign of the Armada, drawing inspiration from its vintage Patrol model. Originally introduced in 1962 as Nissan’s first U.S. vehicle, the Patrol was known for its rugged design and off-road capabilities.

Now, as Nissan gears up to unveil the redesigned Armada on September 3, 2024, the new model promises to blend historical charm with contemporary features. The teaser image and details hint at a vehicle that pays homage to its storied past while incorporating modern advancements.

Reviving the classic Nissan 1960s Patrol

Nissan is embracing nostalgia with its upcoming redesign of the Armada, mirroring Toyota’s successful approach with the Land Cruiser. This move draws inspiration from the 1960s Patrol, which was Nissan's first vehicle to be sold in the American market.

The original Patrol, introduced in 1962, was far from today's luxury SUVs. It featured body-on-frame construction, a leaf-spring suspension, and a 4.0-liter inline-six engine paired with a three-speed manual transmission. The vehicle also boasted four-wheel drive and offered various body styles, reflecting its rugged, utilitarian design.

The legacy of Nissan returns

Although the Patrol was discontinued in the U.S. after 1969, it continued to be available in other markets. It made a return to the American market in 2016 as the Armada. Now, Nissan is gearing up to unveil a redesigned version of the SUV on September 3, 2024. The new model aims to capture the essence of its predecessor while incorporating modern features.

2025 Nissan Armada teaser insights

Ahead of the launch, Nissan has released a teaser image that features a 1967 Patrol alongside the grille of the new Armada. While specifics remain limited, the teaser suggests that the new Armada will be available in a Rock Creek trim. It is anticipated that the redesigned Armada will share elements with the Infiniti QX80, featuring a familiar exterior with unique fascia and special touches. The interior is expected to include a 14.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.3-inch infotainment system, and a lower 9-inch display.

2025 Nissan Armada performance expectations

The redesigned Armada is likely to be powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine, generating 450 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. This engine will be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and an optional four-wheel drive system, promising robust performance and capability.
