After launching the Speed 400 at a lucrative starting price of Rs 2.23 lakh for the first 10,000 buyers in India and Rs 2.33 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom) thereafter, Triumph has now announced that the new motorcycle and the Scrambler 400 X have together received a total of 10,000 bookings in the country. Triumph was able to achieve the number in just 10 days since their official debut in UK on June 27, 2023.
The Speed 400 will be available at Triumph dealerships from the end of this month, whereas the Scrambler 400 X will be available from October onwards, with its price set to be revealed closer to its launch. That said, the sub-500 cc roadster segment has largely been dominated by Royal Enfield for as long as we can remember. RE's current portfolio consists of a range of motorcycles in this very segment, but it looks like the two-wheeler manufacturer finally has a genuine threat.
Royal Enfield's sheer dominance has resulted in a range of manufacturers entering the lucrative space in a bid to take the fight up to the brand including Honda with the H'ness CB350, Jawa as well as Yezdi. Bajaj Auto previously tried to take a slightly different route by introducing the Dominar 400 as a rival to the Classic 350, however, the latter's sales hardly took any dent.
This time around, the threat on Royal Enfield's supremacy seems real. Co-developed by Triumph and Bajaj Auto, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X are more modern-looking than the RE counterparts, offer far better hardware, and are also much more potent on paper. Powering the entry-level Triumph motorcycles is a new 398.15 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that puts out 40 PS of maximum power at 8,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of peak torque at 6,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with an assist and slipper clutch.
Royal Enfield's 350 cc single-cylinder air/oil-cooled motor manages about half of that power output, with torque also being down by over 10 Nm! While Royal Enfield is currently working on a new 450 cc liquid-cooled engine for the upcoming new-gen Himalayan, the 350 cc engine is the company's breadwinner and is currently offered with a majority of its line-up including Hunter 350, Classic 350, Bullet 350 as well as the Meteor 350.
Would you consider purchasing the Triumph Speed 400 or Scrambler 400 X over the likes of Royal Enfield, Jawa, Yezdi and Honda CB350/CB350RS? Let us know in the comments down below.
