Why people take Holika Dahan ashes to home and apply as a Tilak
Holi is almost here, and it is time to celebrate the festival of colors with zeal and joy. From traditional rituals to playing Holi with vibrant colors to delightful sweets and beverages, the preparation for the much-awaited festival has already begun, and this is also the time to seek blessings of the divine and strike out negativity from life. Interestingly, there’s one ritual that revolves around Holika Dahan and its ashes. Read on to know more about it…
Holi and rituals?
There’s no denying that the beginning of Holi is marked by Holika Dahan, which is believed to be the perfect time to seek blessings and manifest goals by following remedies that work towards attracting happiness, good luck, propserity and abundance. This year Holi is falling on Mar 4, 2026 and it is the perfect time to burn away obstacles. It is believed that after the burning of Holika, bringing in the sacred ashes (vibhuti) from the Holika dahan holds a powerful spiritual vibration that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, as Holika burned while saving Prahlad, making them a powerful protective talisman against negativity and planetary doshas.
Victory over negativity
Holika Dahan ashes often embody Prahlad's unburnt faith in Lord Vishnu, which are believed to destroy negativity that reflects Narakasura’s inner demons when applied as tilak on the forehead. Bringing them home shields the family from the evil eye, Rahu afflictions, and tamasic forces for the year.
Purificatory vibhuti power
It is believed that this fire ritual transmutes wood, herbs, and grains into sattvic vibhuti, purifying spaces and auras like Vedic homa. Stored in tiny silver urns, these ashes can cleanse Vastu defects, ensuring prosperity and prana flows in the house.
Protection from malefics
According to the books of astrology, it is believed that Holika vibhuti holds the power to counter Shani, Rahu, and Mangal doshas; this is because of the herbs like neem and sesame offered to the fire that absorb malefic rays during burning. Applying this vibhuti as a tilak on the forehead can activate the third eye (ajna chakra) that gives courage and clarity against obstacles.
Health and longevity blessings
Mixed with ghee or sandalwood, ashes heal pitta imbalances, skin ailments, and fevers per Ayurveda. Applied on children first, it invokes Narasimha's fierce protection, preventing untimely mishaps through summer.
Ritual method
Collect ashes post-dahan with the right hand from the east side, avoiding touching feet; wrap in red cloth with kumkum tilak. Apply Wednesday mornings, chanting "Om Namo Bhagavate Narasimhaya" for amplified graha shanti effects.
