Indian astrology traces its data back around 1500 BCE from the four major Vedic texts. They are the oldest known text material on this subject. Traditionally, the title of "Father of Indian Astrology" is often attributed to Sage Bhirgu, one of the revered Saptarishis (seven sages). Mythology states that Bhirgu received the knowledge of astrology directly from the divine source, Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods. His name appears in various astrological texts, including the Brihat Parashara and Hora Shastra, which is considered a foundational work in Jyotisha.

However, Varahamira is often regarded as the Father of Indian astrology, born in 505 CE in Ujjain, Varahamira was a polymath of his time. His intellectual prowess extended beyond astrology to astronomy, mathematics, and literature. His monumental work, the "Brihat Samhita," written in Sanskrit, that covers a vast array of subjects, including astrology, astronomy, meteorology, architecture, gemmology, and more. Varahamihira's curiosity knew no bounds which resulted in the creation of Brihat Samhita.
