JAIPUR: Polling in Churu, the assembly constituency where voting was deferred, concluded on Friday evening with an estimated 78.55% voter turnout. The election result of the constituency would be declared on December 16.
When elections were held for the other 199 assembly constituencies on December 1, the state recorded an average of 75.65% voter turnout, the highest ever for Rajasthan so far.
Polling for Churu constituency was postponed for December 13 following the death of BSP candidate Jagdish Meghwal. The national party was given additional time to nominate another candidate for the election.
As per the Election Commission, polling in the desert city was peaceful though tight security was arranged to cope with any eventuality. The polling started at 8 am and ended at 5 pm. Nine candidates were in the fray, including the sitting
Congress MLA Hazi Maqbool Madelia and BJP legislator from Taranagar (also in Churu district) Rajendra Singh Rathore.
The BJP has already swept the 14th state assembly polls held for 199 out of the 200 constituencies in 33 districts of the state by winning 162 seats.
Rathore is considered a close aide of party's state president Vasundhara Raje, who was sworn in as the chief minister of the state on Friday afternoon. Raje was the chief minister earlier from 2003 to 2008. Rathore was a cabinet minister then.
